Gail's favourite cookies

These were a staple growing up in my house. My sister Gail and I would always enjoy them from Maynards Bakery and whenever possible make our own. Whatever you call them; Haystacks, Monkey turds, birds nests, unbaked chocolate cookies... they are delicious.


2 cups sugar*

1/2 cup milk

1/2 cup butter

1/2 cup cocoa

1 pinch of salt

1/2 tsp vanilla

3 cups rolled oats

1 cup flaked coconut


In a medium saucepan, combine sugar, milk, butter, cocoa and salt.

Heat to boiling, stirring frequently.

When it has reached a rolling boil, cook for 5 minutes, stirring constantly.

Remove pan from heat and mix in vanilla, oats and coconut.

Drop by spoonfuls onto wax paper, working quickly.

Let cool, and eat!
